I think it might go up this week, even with SM2 coming out. At least I hope it does!! *crosses fingers*

I really have a lot of faith that this movie will be somewhat of a sleeper hit. While all of us highly anticipated it, I don't think it enjoyed the same kind of high profile anticipation for the general public. Ryan and Rachel are unknowns. But think about how moved people are when they go to this movie and how they can't stop talking about it and about Ryan and Rachel once they leave the theatre. All the people who saw it this weekend are going to drag their friends and boyfriends and girlfriends and mothers and sisters, and all of this is going to build up its momentum.
Also, I'm not really worried that Spidey is coming out this week - that movie, while it has broad appeal (and I do plan to see it!), is targeting a very different base than is The Notebook, and I'm certain that our beloved film will keep the romantics like us coming.
So keep the faith!!!

And it's soo true about what you said about after seeing the movie tha people don't stop talking about it. I saw it on Friday and I still can't stop talking about how beautiful it was! It was amazing.

I think the movie did pretty well considering the timing of its release and let's also remember it is a love story among a bunch of big summer releases. We have the 911 controversial documentary that was released on the same date..so rounding up the top 5 is pretty good..i think it's a movie that will find its own voice in the midst of all the blockbusters!!!

at least its not like 2 brothers...that did extremely bad. hopefully they'll at least reach the budget (30 million i believe) so we'll have a good dvd to own im trying to keep my faith out about the whole "sleeper hit thing" it would be so dissapointing for people to overlook this movie to go see something stupid (ie...white chicks!). overall...a pretty dissapointing opening weekend i mean, farenheit 9/11 was only playing in about a third of the theatres as the notebook, and it made 21 million dollars! but like you guys said, it was really controversial. *sigh* people just don't embrace love stories very well, which is sad

I just checked something A Walk to Remember opened with 12 millions and ended up grossing 41 millions on a run of 12 weeks...which is considered a good success when you think of the budget they had invested to make it. Hopefully the Notebook will follow this path as the sleeper movie of the summer.

yeah --- and a walk to remember sucks... lol
but then again -- moore and west attract more people because mandy's got the singing stuff and shane was 'hot' according to those 13 year olds who saw it..
but Rachel's the mean girl.....*whoppee* and Ryan is unknown virtually to young'uns

I don't think too many people went because of Mandy...her singing career wasn't all that great. obviously her faithful fans went, but i think she generated new ones from the movie. plus, jan. 25 (when AWTR opened) there was less competition...and even though it opened third at the box office it made less than the notebook did this week.

well, considering the lack of publicity it got, its not too bad. and considering that because its a romance, its limiting itself to a smaller target audience than say, for example, spiderman.

I was actually really happy with opening weekend results. I mean you had White Chicks that opened two days before The Notebook and on several more screens and Fairenheit 9/11, which is a national phenomenon. It's been in the news non-stop for months. Dodgeball is getting really good word of mouth, and well what can you say about Spielberg and Hanks. Considering that was the competition, this summer romance starring two virtually unknown actors, that received little publicity, and was not on a million screens did great in my opinion.
