I thought it was really interesting that one or both of the Jameses (I think at least Marsden) deliberately chose not to read the book before he did the movie. He said that he was afraid that in playing his part, having read the book was going to lead him to deviate what the screenwriter and director intended through the screenplay. So he read the book - after he was done filming the movie.

Really? That's a good point he have. Maybe reading the book before completing filming would slightly ruin how he would portray the character he supposed to.

i have not read the book because i am planning to read it after i see the movie the reason for that is because i know that the movie has more detail to it and i dont want to go to the movies to see missing detail and parts of the story id rather do it reversed.

That's a really good idea. I probably would have thought it would be better to read before doing the movie but I guess it would be better to read after. Thx for the info!

One good thing about having read the book beforehand is that I've been looking with anticipation for this movie ever since, so regardless of whether or not there were trailers available, regardless of who they cast, etc. I would've been looking out for this film. I'm so glad it's turned out so beautifully!
The one bad thing about reading the book beforehand, however, is that if you read the book before the cast was ever chosen, you might have been skeptical of whom they ultimately cast. Like I've said in prior posts, I was skeptical of Ryan Gosling. Again, I'm so glad it turned out so beautifully with this choice of actor!

That's another good point. I think I personaly i'm happy that I read the book first. Even though I haven't seen the movie yet. I'm excited about it and I feel more attached to the movie and characters now.

i just posted something like this in the other thread, but i think both ways have their pros and cons. if you read the book before, you can visualize things without having it already visualized for you by someone else...and it also fills you in and gives you a better perspective on some of the characters emotions and thoughts. but at the same time, if you read it before...you have higher expectations when you're going into the movie- so maybe it is better to read it after? (too late for most of us, more than likely )

i just wanted to say, i thought it was really interesting that James Garner did not read the book before he made the movie, and says he will never read the book. He said if he read it before the movie, he would probably want things changed, and then you would have to mess with the sript etc, etc. He says he will not read it after because he likes to look at the movie as a movie with the story the way it is told in the movie.
